Cumbre frequently asked questions

Here are a number of the frequently asked questions from people new to racehorse ownership. Please feel free to contact the office if you don't find your answer here.

Getting Started
First off, please feel free to give Gavin Beever a call. Gavin has dealt with many new owners and understands the nervousness and hesitations of prospective owners who are looking for a "certainty" or another Testa or Speccy. One thing is certain, and that is that nothing in life is certain. Having said that, all Cumbre horses are selected thru a programmed methodology so, the best chances of replicating success for owners can be achieved.

If you are interested in owning a racehorse you should come to one of the Cumbre Open Days. These days provide a terrific introduction to the racehorse and testimonials from current owners say that those days where a fabulous way to get to know horses, Cumbre and the people.

Cumbre is an authorised representative of Sire Custodians. AFS License 223671. That means that Cumbre is a licensed syndicator of racehorses.

Owner Costs
Syndicated horses mean that the costs are spread over the members of a syndicate. Typically this may be 10 shares.

The initial share price comprises several components. These include but are not restricted to:

* purchase price (based on pedigree and market fluctuations at the time of purchase)
* veterinary inspections, x-ray examinations and scoping
* transport from sales venue to agistment property / stables
* spelling
* breaking in (if applicable prior to syndication)
* pre-training / training fees (if applicable prior to syndication)
* race nominations and acceptances for eligible horses
* veterinary consultations
* advertising and promotion

Insurance forms another part of the costs and then there are the ongoing Training and Spelling costs.

Training invoices generally include but are not restricted to items such as:

* training fees
* gallops / track fees
* nominations / acceptances fees
* farrier
* dentist
* floating
* veterinary supplies
* drenches
* medicaments, e.g. vitamin supplements

Spelling invoices generally include but are not restricted to items such as:

* agistment
* drenches
* clipping
* farrier
* rug hire
* any vet requirements

Finally, as part of the Cumbre Racing Partnership there is a small management fee that forms the basis for arranging race days and communication etc.

For a complete breakdown of these general costs please contact Gavin Beever or view one of the current prospectuses for one of the horses currently being syndicated.

Benefits of being an Owner
All owners enjoy full ownership privileges (subject to various Race Club regulations) and are registered thru Racing Victoria

Owners are entitled to the Owners Gold Card and all benefits of that card are explained on the Racing Victoria owners website (Click Here to go to that Racing Victoria webpage).

At Cumbre we treat all owners big or small with the same respect and attention. We try our best and that is all people can ask.

As a registered owner you own the horse up to the level of your investment. As such, you participate fully in any decisions made about the horse. When your horse wins, you are also entitled to your share of the prize money. How this works is that, the trainer's (10%) and jockey's (5%) share of the prize money is deducted and paid out directly by the race club before the remainder of the earnings is distributed to the Cumbre Syndicate account.

Owner Communication
Cumbre provide regular updates on each of the horses by email, fax and phone ad the office is available at all times to discuss any items.

Once a horse is placed with a trainer, the various trainers also provide updates directly to the owners. These updates complement further updates from Cumbre that are based on Gavin's private discussions with each of the trainers. These communications are particularly relevant wen a horse is in a racing campaign.

Visiting your Horse
All owners are most welcome to visit their horse while spelling at Cumbre Stud. There is also accommodation for those that may like to stay in the area.

When your racehorse is with the trainers, owners are welcome to visit at the stables to see their horse in training etc. Cumbre will provide a stable orientation visit. This will provide a way to introduce the owners to the stable, the trainer and staff. Stables are busy workplaces so all visits should be made by first phoning the stable.

It's Race day

This is what it is all about. The excitement. The Anticipation. It's show time!

Cumbre will host race days and typically this means all owners meeting socially for lunch in the members dining or it could be a hampered picnic. It all depends on the racetrack, the day, and the wishes of the owners.

Then it is down to watching and cheering your horse in the race.

Owners will meet with the trainer at the race day stables and receive a pre race update.

Owners will receive access to the mounting yard and can participate in the pre- and post-race analysis from the trainer and jockey (the number of passes available per owner on a given race day is subject to various Race Club regulations).

After the race, celebrations or commiserations in the winners/owners' bar where you can watch continuous replays of the race.

Race day planning communication occur pre race day and then post race day there is always a wrap up etc.

Lots of fun!
