Feb 2007 Cumbre Newsletter
01 February, 2007 by admin
Hello all, I hope your Christmas went well and all the best for 2007. A lot has happened at Cumbre since my last update. This email gives an overview.
A Great Christmas Period – 5 Runs for Four Firsts and a Third
We had an excellent Christmas and New Year period, Santa was very good to us! We had four wins and a fast finishing third from five runs over the three week Christmas – New Year period.
It all started on Boxing Day with a strong win to Abernethy. Lady Lisbon had a barnstorming finish to win by some lengths on the 27/12, followed by Cumbre Rocket winning on New Years Day, then Abernethy with a fast finishing third on the 8th of January, followed up by Lady Lisbon scoring an outstanding city win at Sandown on the 17th of January.
Congratulations to all connections in those horses, there are 29 people involved between all three horses and it was a lot of fun and very satisfying to see people getting so much out of it.
A Successful Start Training At Cumbre
Up until August of last year I was breaking in and pre-training horses and syndicating horses I had selected. I have now completed a Diploma of Racing and other requirements during a very rigorous process to attain a Trainers License which I was granted and came into effect in August. The license enables me to train as a Trainer for Cumbre Racing.
In the five months since, I have had five horses to the races for three individual winners with my runners weighing in 60% of the time and winning prize money 45% of the time over 22 starts. It has been a great start as four of the horses had their first starts ever and I had taken them from scratch and the fifth was a tried horse coming back from an injury. I very much thank the owners for supporting me and our staff who put in and live the dream as well.
First Five Syndicate Horses Now Turn Four, With Three Of The Five Being City Winners
Our first five syndicate horses we purchased in 2004 are now four year olds. Four have made it to the races. Three of the five have now been city winners, two of the five have been good enough to compete at Group One level, Testa Reale our first runner, first winner, first city winner and first stakes horse, remains number one being multiple stakes placed.
She ran fifth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond, second in the Listed William Crockett Stakes, 4th in the Group 3 Mc Neil Stakes, 3rd in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes, 5th in Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes, 3rd in the Listed Alexandria Stakes and 5th in the Group 2 Yallambee Classic and she has enough hard luck stories to right a small book about – the joys of racing! None the less we are very proud of her and she is back in pre-training after recovering from a bone chip and hopefully will be racing in the Autumn.
Starspect a two time winner and city winner is back in pre-training and also is planned to race in the Autumn.
Lady Lisbon now a three time winner is still in training and will have another start in early February.
Miss Annie after running a promising third in her second start had a horse kick her in the barriers and then panicked injuring her back. Although she did train on, she appeared to never fully get back her early ability and has now been retired.
Flippa, a horse with all heart was diagnosed with a bone cyst as a yearling and although in training showed the ability to say she may well have managed a win, but the time and expense implications for the connections made it best to sell her on.
The Next Generation
We still have shares in five 2 year olds for sale or lease, now ready to run horses showing great promise and being ready to run a lot of the risk taken out of them, hopefully they can continue on the form! They come from the likes of outstanding sires – Rory’s Jester (Enough said), Hussonet (What a start to an Australian career he has had!), Show A Heart (First Season Sire Season Champion and now streeting ahead on the Second Season table), see our website www.cumbre.com for more details. Show A Heart and Hussonet were the sires to recently quinella the Magic Millions Two Year Old race.
Staff Changes
Our foreman Chloe Armstrong has had a full year with us and now heads off to complete a Diploma in Horse Management. We thank Chloe for all her efforts and congratulate her on winning a scholarship!
Monique Bronsgeest is our new foreman. Monique has been with us for 6 months having had experience working for Pat Hyland and Gwenda Johnstone, she has hit the ground running with us and we very much look forward to working with her into the future.
Kylie Neil has joined us as our book keeper, Rebecca Mitchell joins us as a stable hand after four years experience with Pat Carey and Kylie Goodsell joins Rob and Craig Kirkpatrick as a track rider.
Ada remains as our hard working Client Manager and Chloe Bailey who is in her VCE year, is still working casually and is now our longest serving employee!
Latest News and Runners – How to follow
For those wanting to keep up with our horses and the news our website will shortly have a latest news and runners tab. As we accept for races we will put the runners on that page and also post the results.
Current horses racing are Abernethy and Lady Lisbon (at Tony Noonan’s), other horses in work are Paris Storm, Advocaat, Starspect, Deraisme (at Mike Moroney’s), Sedgewick, Testa Reale, Unnamed Market Force filly, Unnamed Show A Heart Filly and an Unnamed Rory’s Jester Filly. All being well you will see them at the races over the autumn period.
Kind regards & Happy Racing
