Cumbre Starspect in training

Super Vobis eligible

Foaled : 28th September 2002

Comments : “A beautifully balanced, very correct and attractive filly.
She looks like she will get over ground and is very much like a combination of her sire and dam sire. She has a strong pedigree and residual value potential as a broodmare.“

Sire : Spectrum - Dam : Star of Grosvenor
The preparation of this filly has been on logic in hoping for a mile and beyond. Let's Hope!!!

Prior to this mating all previous matings of Star of Grosvenor having been to sprinter's except for Danehill who could throw winners over all distances.

Spectrum was a classic horse that enjoyed all his success at a mile and beyond. Any comparison with photo's of our filly can see there is a strong resemblance.

The key Dam is the third dam in her pedigree - Royal Heroine and it is her peformance we hope will be reflected in generations to come in the pedigree. She was an outstanding champion turf mare in USA. She had the capacity to race early and successfully over 1200m and then her outstanding major group successes were at a mile and beyond, (really 1800m at beyond).

The logic in our filly was on type she looks like a mile and beyond horse, she had a strong resemblance to her father who was a classic winning mile and beyond horse. The mating with Royal Heroine and to trying to pick up on the Royal Heroine influence and certainly it threw on type a staying type filly.

Spectrum nicks well with Last Tycoon Mares, as a broodmare sire Last Tycoon is
frequently in the Top 10 and is the 5th most successful nick with Spectrum (8 named foals for 7 runners for 4 winners, the most successful being Vignette who won a listed race over 1400m.)

To date the peformance on Star of Grosvenor has not been up to the value of her progeny, but she has thrown horses that have got to the track and then gone on to win, which is a much better than average result. Royal Hero by Rory's Jester is a sprinter as his father would influence but he is still racing now as a five year old gelding so he has raced on which is not a Rory's Jester typical trait. Only truly Champion Broodmares throw stakes winner after stakes winner, in many cases they through several winners, an outstanding horse, a good horse or two and some that do not make it to the track for whatever reason.

Summary of her first campaign: Spring 2005

Our gorgeous Speccy had a great first campaign during the spring winning twice and being beaten for 2nd at her other start. At her third race start - her city racing debut - she , the only filly in the field, won beating all the boys. That race was at Moonee Valley at the end of October.

The form around Speccy during those last two races proved solid with Zigotto (who she beat at Moonee Valley) running 2nd at big odds in the Sandown Guineas in mid-November. The race was won by Cayambe but was unfortunately marred by the fatal fall of a Sydney horse close to the finishing line. On form it appears that Speccy would have certainly been competitive in that company had she been running. It was decided to give her a rest before preparing her for an Autumn campaign.

Speccy is now back home at Cumbre knee deep in green grass and with her stable-mate Testa Reale. She is relaxed and well and enjoying a good break in the country. Speccy has returned a much bigger horse after her first racing campaign. She is still long in the body but is now taller and has a much stronger shoulder. On looks she appears to be a real racehorse. On the track she has proven she is; already she has shown that she has a great turn-of-foot. She still has a few things to learn, such as “jumping-out” from the barrier with the rest of the field, but trainer Tony Vasil feels this will come with time and experience. Her consistency in this brief first campaign, together with her natural inclination to relax and her ability to accelerate quickly are all qualities that indicate she will be a versatile horse as she gets older and races in open company. She has already demonstrated that she can match it with the boys ... and win.

The Autumn beckons and presents Speccy with exciting opportunities to demonstrate to all her ability in distance races in Adelaide and beyond. It will certainly be an interesting time for all connections and followers of Speccy. In the meantime, there are a few paddocks waiting to be mowed and converted to kilograms of horseflesh. Enjoy it Speccy and well done. We look forward to some real Speccy efforts in 2006.
Go Speccy!
